homecoming week - 4th and 5th days

thursday was the first day where I could see the different grades of high school working together as a team. each grade had a different holiday in the year and we should wear ourselves thinking about the theme of the holiday. the freshman year got Valentine's Day, the sophomore year got Christmas, the junior year (my one) got St. Patrick's Day and the senior year got 4th of July (American independence day) | quinta-feira foi o primeiro dia em que eu pude ver as diferentes series trabalhando como um time. cada sherie tinha um feriado diferente e a gente devia se vestir pensando no tema desse feriado. o feriado do primeiro ano era o Dia dos Namorados, do segundo ano o Natal, do terceiro ano o St. Patricks Day e do quarto ano o 4 de Julho (dia da independência).

although i loved all those special homecoming days, I think that the friday was my favorite. it was the blue and gold day, when all the school wore the school's colors to celebrate the new basketball season during the pep rally, a kind of parade where all the school, from kindergarten until the seniors, get together to scream and have a good time on our last two classes.

homecoming week - 1st, 2nd and 3rd days

in the beginning, I just could not understand what would happen on that week. I asked different people about what was this and from almost all of them I got the same answer: you have to be there and joy us to understand.

on monday morning, the only thing I was sure about was that I should go to school, for some reason, wearing... pajamas. Rachel lend me a soft light blue owl pajama, that fit perfectly on me and was actually pretty comfortable. I wore my snow boots and Sarah's heavy coat from the door to the car, from the car to the door, and when I got on school I realized that it really was a pajama's day. everybody really was wearing funny and colorful pajamas, walking on the corridor and going to classes as a normal week day. as expected, we had all our classes as in a normal week day and I wore pajamas untill I went to the shower to take a shower and put another pajama.

the next day was the twin day. on this day, you're supposed to choose a friend and you both should wear the same outfit. I matched with Sarah, wearing two sweaters that I bought in Indianapolis on our last Youth Ambassador weekend, one in gray and another in red, but both looking exactly the same. there was a bunch of really creative things, like people looking like some sort of professional or as some movie character, all pretty funny.

and the next day was western day. just.. funny. the western U.S. region is culturally similar to our caipiras, their cowboys. although they have those culture in all over the country, especially in countryside cities, it's traditionally related to their west. because of that, on "western day", people are supposed to wear clothes like flannels with jeans and cowboy's boots. and there I went. Sarah lend me a pair of boots that doesn't fit on her anymore, I wore my blue jeans and a light blue flannel, also from Sarah, to at least match all the colors. it was awesome. for some reason, I really felt more weird in going to school as a "traditional western person" than wearing pajamas.

the double

— What about money in Brazil? How does it work?
— Well, we have reais, it costs for about a half of a dollar. I mean, one dollar values for about two reais, so it's probably cheaper for you to go there, depending on what you want to buy. Like clothes are much nore expensive, for example.
— Oh, cool. So it means that if I have two girls in the US, in Brazil I can have four?
Naive. That's what I am.

— E o dinheiro no Brazil?

Burris Laboratory School

I've been there for 2 weeks and I'm already pretty comfortable to say that... it's MY school here. I feel like Burris hugged me since I got there. the classmates, the teachers, the lockers, the chairs, the walls, they're all providing me the best environment for learning that I've ever had.

on my first day, I choose my subjects according to my will. my hostparents and I went in a meeting with the school counselor, Mrs. Maugherman, who is really awesome, and she showed me the school schedule, with a million choices per period. at first, I choose what seemed to be more interesting for me, but still on Monday, I changed my schedule twice (because one class was full and because band here was really hard for me). since then, I have Spanish III - Mrs. Sponseller - at 8:00, Speech Advanced - Mr. Shears - at 9:00, Ceramics - Mrs. Stokes - at 10:00, World Geography - Mr. Canada - at 11:00, lunch at 12:00 (here! with the people on the photo) and World History - Mrs. Avery - at 1:00. my classes finish at 2:00 and in some days of the week I have Anime Club, where we just watch Japanese cartoon and laugh a lot, Key Club, a volunteer group, and others.

Rio, the movie

Sunday morning, doing volunteer work with kids in a Quaker church, I was drawing. Cuutting coloured paper, using glue, until the girl that was in my front ask me from where I was. "From Brasil, far away, you know?" One of them known. He said he sae the movie Rio. He asked me if I had a bird. "I don't, but my grandma does." And another girl also knew. She knew that there wasn't big cities as the ones that she knows. I taught a bit about how should I answer her, but I didn't have the time enough: the boy next to me whispered what was happening. "You should not care about her, she haven't even seen the movie." "Do Brasil, bem longe, sabe?"
